EXCELLENT WORSHIPER

CHAPTER 06:   EXCELLENCE MATTERS

Philippians 2:2
2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

Our excellence should dare to press forward and represent the Savior and King. The disciples whom Jesus chose to have around Him were an imperfect bunch of people to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. But all of them (most of them) loved Jesus more than life.

I. KNOWING CHRIST MATTERS

Most agree that loving Christ more than life is a basic premise to our FAITH, but we easily get caught up in the BUSYNESS of our life, and this foundational need to love Jesus more than all else isn’t everyone’s REALITY. BUT giving the Lord first place in our lives is absolutely necessary in our worship of Him. We need to continually review our priorities all the time and understand the Sovereignty of God in our lives.

Job had to tell about priorities in life! everything that belonged to him was taken away and yet he said

Job 19:25
25 For I know that my Redeemer lives,
and at the last he will stand upon the earth.[

Where would you be without Jesus Christ?

You need to know to answer this question before you bring your gift of WORSHIP to the altar. KNOW GOD, TRUST IN HIM. Know that He lives and know that His heart for you is greater than even your own ambitions for yourself.

II. YOUR TESTIMONY MATTERS

The worship that you bring to the Lord is fueled by your testimony. Be assures that your testimony matters.
  • Is you life a testimony of the grace of God?
  • Is He your everything?
  • Has he done many miracles in your life?

Your testimony, your personal experience with God will bring passion to your gift of worship. If you play an instrument, remembering what God has done in for you will cause you to play like you have never played before. A personal encounter with God brings a powerful convict on others because they can see God has done in you.

Your testimony matters.

III. EXCELLENCE MATTERS

We are to serve God with excellence because we know an EXCELLENT GOD. To give Him anything but our BEST would be demeaning. offer Him you FINEST at whatever stage your finest is. Not what you want your finest to be or what you wish it was, but offer your FINEST FO R TODAY! The testimony and impart of serving with excellence is like watching the ripple effect over the ocean- excellence sends out waves, touching lives in ways that you may never see.

Psalm 33:3
3 Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

We are to be skillful in our service to the Lord. When the music is superb, the art is breathtaking, when the gives are giving, the servers are serving, the singers are singing, and everyone s worshiping God with his or her unique gifts, the visitors stand in awe see your GREAT GOD!

Incorrect perceptions of what church is on memories of what church like in the past have kept almost an entire generation out of the house of God. We are the GENERATION to change that poor image of church. We are to bring excellence back into the sanctuary. We are to loose creativity and put reverence in the church.

Excellence means DETAIL. The crowd can do things well, but the CHILDREN OF THE LIVING GOD should be ABLE TO BRING “THE EXTRAORDINARY” in to all they do. Excellence means banning the response of “that will do” and “near enough is good enough” from our vocabularies. That mentality will never bring anything outstanding to the sanctuary of the Lord. When the Lord designed the Tabernacle, He was meticulous in detail

Exodus 35:35
35 He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or by a designer or by an embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, or by a weaver—by any sort of workman or skilled designer.

Excellence means DISCIPLINE. We need discipline to settle only for what is excellent in our thinking, in our rehearsals , in our personal planning and in keeping our word to others.

Philippians 4:8

8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
When our thoughts are excellent, our deeds will be excellent too, and excellence matters.

IV. SERVICE MATTERS

Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Circumcise Your Heart
12 “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD, which I am commanding you today for your good?
Be an extravagant worshiper who is dedicated to SERVING HIM. In a secular world, music and the arts is an exclusive arena. Only a chosen few, a small percentage of people, get past all the auditions, only the people who are highly skilled, who are very beautiful “get a break” in the music and arts world. In the kingdom of God, art and music is INCLUSIVE  to EVERYONE.

God welcomes ALL to share their artistic gift to express themselves, God says “You fit into my masterpiece, You belong here.”

There are many musicians who shit alone in their bedroom. Night after night,  guitar in hand, playing very well, who wish someone could hear them others than themselves. If only they would dedicate their God-given talent to His service. God is calling the highly skilled musicians to dedicate their music to the service of the King. SERVING HIM BRINGS JOY THAT CANNOT BE FOUND OUTSIDE HIS PURPOSE. One can find money, and plenty of it outside serving the Lord, but indescribable joy accompanies service to the King.

V. UNITY MATTERS

Unity not only matters, it’s essential. Unity in the church is very critical to the testimony for the church. Jesus prayed for unity among all believers…

John 17:20-23

20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
Unity supernaturally shows the world that God sent Jesus to demonstrate His love for us. This truth needs to sink deep into our hearts allowing UNITY to flow through the church so that the world may Know Him

Psalm 133:1

When Brothers Dwell in Unity
1 Behold, how good and pleasant it is     when brothers dwell in unity![a]
Romans 15:5-6
5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  •    God loves Unity

What a glorious testimony to His goodness if when His worshipers LAUGH TOGETHERS, PRAY TOGETHER, MINISTER TOGETHER, GET DOWN AND DO LIFE TOGETHER. This is rare and precious thing and God says that if we dwell in unity He commands blessings. To be IN UNITY is a DECISION that we must ALL continually make. We never  have to fight for it because the enemy wants to divide and weaken us.

Do whatever it takes to have and to keep unity. Because God blesses it and He responds to it. In fact, He requires unity –

Colossians 3:13-14
13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

Ephesians 4:11-14
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds[a] and teachers,[b] 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood,[c] to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

(God gave us various gifts to help built one another  up)

Unity can happen without MATURITY. God blesses unity, and we can’t have unity without growing up spiritually. We pray for unity, which is excellent, but if WE DON’T MAKE AN EFFORT TO LOVE EACH OTHER ENOUGH TO DO SOMETHING RADICAL about it, we won’t see the blessing that God wants to pour out on a unified church.

BE COMMITTED TO UNITY AND RECONCILIATION within the church body where God has put you. You may not be one of the leaders on the platform, but you are still part of the team, even if you are worshipping from the church pew. Just be COMMITTED TO THE BODY OF CHRIST, that God leads you to. Don’t leave a question mark. Don’t even leave room for a little crack in the door that lets you out of responsibility. BE COMMITTED TO YOUR LOCAL CHURCH TEAM, and do whatever you must to have unity. DO WHATEVER IT TAKES. God honors every time He finds it.

Ephesians 4:2-6
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

“eager to maintain” means we actually HAVE TO DO SOMETHING. If we pray for unity and we still hold on to grudged over silly things, the church will never be head instead of the tail. We must get into our community and say “we have something to sing about, we have something to live for, our God is an awesome God and He asked is to “do life” with people from diverse background and look at us, we actually love each other and we are committed to one another, and it is a great testimony!”

Unity does not come by chance, it does not come without work, and it does not come without dying to self on a daily basis. It is hard sometimes, but it is so worth it. It’s time for GOD’S PEOPLE TO GROW UP.

VI. FRIENDSHIP MATTERS

Genuine friendship matters among believers. The Word says to offer more than is asked of us. We’ve to imitate Christ to others. We’ve to offer the type of friendship that takes a blow for someone even if it costs us. We are to be the friend that lays down his life for another – that is a serious friendship. When Jesus gathered His friends- the disciples for their final Passover meal, He said-

Luke 22:15
15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

God has not called us to play/sing together but He has also called us to be ministers of His Holy Word together. We should have strong friendships with those who worship with us. A friendship with each other requires a CHOICE AND COMMITMENT. Serving God with our friends is probably one other secret bonus we never expected to find in this journey of discovery.

VII. EXTREME GENEROSITY MATTERS

Matthew 2:1-11

The Visit of the Wise Men
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[a] from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[b] and have come to worship him.” 3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,     are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;  for from you shall come a ruler     who will shepherd my people Israel.’” 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
The Christian story of the wise men coming to Bethlehem to adore their King is a beautiful accent of worship. These brave men travelled many miles to bring their “personal treasures” and set their gifts before the Saviour of the world. When they saw the Child Christ, they were filled with joy and they fell down in worship.  They opened what they have brought for Him and gave their generous gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh because they were so in love with the King,

Matthew 6:21
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Your treasure is the thing that you hold the closest to you, but these men were so thankful and gave to Him out of it. They would never forget the day their SAviour was born. The account of their long trip and their extreme generosity gas been told for 2,000 years to all mankind.

An extravagant worshiper has a generous heart even outside the sanctuary. Be generous in your love toward one another, look for ways that you can go outside of yourself, outside your comfort zone, to be generous. Do something that really blesses someone, something that costs you, even if only a few cents to post a letter. Send a thank you card to someone who’s been doing a great work behind the scenes, or even to someone who's always seen working hard. It doesn’t cost much to recognize someone with appreciation. Extreme generosity doesn’t require a million dollar contribution. Surprise someone with a random act of KINDNESS.
If we can stand in the sanctuary and praise the Lord with our glorious sing, we should also serve Him with extravagant love for others, or else something is wrong with our life’s message. Be generous in your worship both outside and inside the sanctuary,

Proverbs 11:25
25 Whoever brings blessing will be enriched,
and one who waters will himself be watered.

Proverbs 22:9

9 Whoever has a bountiful[a] eye will be blessed,
for he shares his bread with the poor.

I’m not talking about simply giving money. I am talking about letting generosity be part of who you are. If we dare to call ourselves extravagant worshippers we OUGHT TO BE LEADERS IN EVERYTHING, not just music, and being extremely generous is a part of the result of spending time in the presence of God, generosity is a key to unlocking the windows of blessing on our lives. We are to GIVE FROM THE HEART that doesn’t only want to receive but that gives because we love Him more than our life.

Mark 8:35

35 For whoever would save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it.
An extravagant worshiper will want to give his/her life for the GOSPEL- that is extreme generosity. Generous describes the core of who Jesus is.

VIII. DISCIPLINE AND DETERMINATION MATTER

As extravagant worshipers, we need to overrule our feelings. Worship releases creativity in us, but creative people ten to live in the “feelings” department. This tendency can be both our best and our worst feature. Feelings can bring us to brilliant conclusions but they can also destroy us if we don’t place our feelings under submission to God’s Word.

Isaiah 50:4-7
4 The Lord GOD has given me     the tongue of those who are taught,  that I may know how to sustain with a word     him who is weary.  Morning by morning he awakens;     he awakens my ear     to hear as those who are taught. 5 The Lord GOD has opened my ear,     and I was not rebellious;     I turned not backward. 6 I gave my back to those who strike,     and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard;  I hid not my face     from disgrace and spitting. 7 But the Lord GOD helps me;     therefore I have not been disgraced;  therefore I have set my face like a flint,     and I know that I shall not be put to shame.
These Scriptures show us to have DETERMINATION. (I will not be tossed. I will not be moved. I will not draw back. ) we must be DETERMINED to GRAB HOLD OF GOD and ask for our miracle, because He is more desperate to pour His glory on us than we are to receive it,. We need determination to COMPLETE OUR MISSION. As extravagant worshiper, we are never to “gig” on a “show”. We are on a HEAVNELY MISSION and being determined to see His purpose accomplished requires a response from our glorious God.

Determine your mind to AGREE on God’s Word. It will affect your speech, and it will affect your attitude toward excellence. It will affect your attitude!

Daniel 3:8-30

The Fiery Furnace
8 Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came forward and maliciously accused the Jews.9 They declared[a] to King Nebuchadnezzar, “O king, live forever! 10 You, O king, have made a decree, that every man who hears the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image. 11 And whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into a burning fiery furnace. 12 There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, pay no attention to you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in furious rage commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. So they brought these men before the king. 14 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them, “Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up? 15 Now if you are ready when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good.[b] But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?”
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.[c] 18 But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury, and the expression of his face was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was usually heated. 20 And he ordered some of the mighty men of his army to bindShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then these men were bound in their cloaks, their tunics,[d] their hats, and their other garments, and they were thrown into the burning fiery furnace. 22 Because the king's order was urgent and the furnace overheated, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. 23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fellbound into the burning fiery furnace.
24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up in haste. He declared to hiscounselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.” 25 He answered and said, “But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.” 26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning fiery furnace; he declared,“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here!” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the fire. 27 And the satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king's counselors gathered together and saw that the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men. The hair of their heads was not singed, their cloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them. 28Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside[e] the king's command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God. 29 Therefore I make a decree: Any people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.” 30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the province of Babylon.
Story of Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego was a story of extravagant worship together.
But their determination was evident when they agreed (Daniel 3:18). It takes that sort of determination, that sort of discipline, to follow through with the call of God on your life.

Sometimes, it might not “feel” like everything you need is there in front of you. But if you are in a valley of despair and discouragement, you need to know God intimately enough and say Even if the midst of this, I will not bow. I know my God and I know His heart for me, so if I am in a valley Lord, let me learn, let me learn quickly.Learn this lesson of determination quickly, otherwise this test of faith will come right back at you again until you do learn it. Be determined with that fire in your belly that say “I will bless the Lord at all times and in all ways.”
Whatever the gift or treasure you bring to the altar, cover it with the determination and discipline to bless the Lord no matter what.

  • -       Know God intimately through personal worship so you will know that He is faithful.
  • -       Know He overseas His call on your life to fulfill His work
  • -       Don’t worry about it. Just serve and be glad.

IX. BE STRONG

Extravagant worshipers know how to be lovers of God and they become a pillar of strength, we are created in the image of God. Be strong in unity, excellence, determination and service. All these matter and reflect an exceptional attitude as one who has spent time in the presence of the Lord.

Don’t be afraid of discipline, both in the mind and in action.

Proverbs 10:17
17 Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,
but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.

Proverbs 1:7
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;     fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 13:18
18 Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction,
but whoever heeds reproof is honored.

If you are enjoying a season of a favor and success, I challenge you not to lose sight of the discipline and faithfulness that placed you there. SUCCESS is a challenge for an extravagant worshiper because success is one of the enemies.  Worship brings favor and success into our lives but success can give us a false sense of how great we are. We can quickly forget that our success id the result of HOW GREAT GOD IS.

Success can tempt you to ride on its momentum rather than continue to do the faithful things that allowed walking that path in the first place. I challenge you not to refrain from doing all those things that allow you the privilege of having influence no matter how great or small. KEEP WORSHIP OF THE LORD FIRST AND FOREMOST IN YOUR LIFE.

Success can make us stack and casual. It can make us presumptuous that “everything will be alright”. We stop worrying about rehearsal. “Worship will be great”. Well, it won’t be if we don’t make it different from the service before. It won’t be id we don’t know how the songs!
Don’t presume that you can bring casual gifts to worship. Only fools despise wisdom.

  • -       Keep your attention on details
  • -       Keep that fire in you being
  • -       Keep the zeal in your worship that drove you to God’s face when you first believed.
  • -       Go back to that place where the call of God drove you crazy. To that call of God which you could not escape.
  • -       Don’t fear discipline and faithfulness, because they can be your greatest friends.

X. THE POWER OF PITFALLS OF SUCCESS

Joshua 1:8
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Every Christian has the desire to be successful and to achieve God’s purpose for his/her life. Yet why do many tastes success and remain unfulfilled? The pursuit of success for the sake of being successful is an empty well. Success in itself will not satisfy us. The world’s picture of success if so seductive, it offers money, fame and glamour. Yet, God’s picture of success is that of a servant, dead to self and alive to Christ. Success can be both a positive and a negative influence, and it’s your choice which road of success you will walk.

What success can bring?

1. Success generated momentum

The momentum of success can be your bestfriend, it’s like he breath of God, making one day to be ore valuable and worthwhile than a thousand days. When momentum is on your side, the future looks bright, obstacles look small and troubles seem transitory. Momentum actually makes you look better than you are.

You can abuse momentum if you stop digging for the gold that gave it to you in the first place. If you stop pursuing the basics of faith, the core of values of love, you will lose the favor that first brought success. We’re simply to seek Kingdom of God and His righteousness follows. But if you take your eyes off of the Kingdom of heaven and begin to think “I’m awesome, we’re awesome, we can do it!” you will abuse the privilege of success and lose sight of the higher call.

2.    Success brings focus
When people are focused they develop senses of destiny and purpose and start to believed in themselves. Suddenly, destiny is attainable, focus is sharpened and they develop that “iron will” on determination in their souls!
If we don’t’ focus on the right thing, we are in trouble. There’s a temptation to focus in the “gift” instead of the “gift-giver”. This leads to strife comparison, discontentment and jealousy. We should not get there! Keep your eyes on the price; focus your efforts outward rather than inward. Focus on the Lord and not only on all His benefits.

3.    With success comes influence
What an honor it is to have influence! God through His incredible grace has given us favor to influence godly changes in people’s lives. To be a part of building God’s Kingdom is so exciting!
Influence can easily be abused when it is “self-seeking” and “self-serving”. Many people have been a part of great ministry trams and then suddenly believed that the success was all about them and that this team was holding them back. Thus thinking cause’s people to lose humility that gave them that influence in the first place. Many people crave influence and fame, but they aren’t prepared to pay the price or take on the responsibility that goes hand in hand with that influence.

It takes GUTS to be an influence to the Kingdom of God; young people are content to simply sit in the crowd, because they don’t want to be seen. They don’t; want to be notices because with INFLUENCE comes the RESPONSIBILITY OF LEADING PEOPLE to a GODLY PLACE. God wants worshipers who are not just part of the crowd but who will stand out from the crowd.

God isn’t looking for someone who is amazingly talented to influence others to live a godly life. He looks for someone who will be obedient. God uses ordinary people like you and me. Any influence we have is only because GOD HAS PUT IT IN OUR HAND. We love the King, and we should love Him more than our life. But learn that it takes COURAGE to be an INFLUENCE, because we must be willing to stand out from the crowd. We can’t hide our faith, our love for Him if we want to continue to be an influence.

4.    Success is attractive
Like attracts like. And when you walk the path of success with humility, like hearted people are attracted to you which forms powerful partnerships. A worshiping church attracts worshiping people.
However, if you want to be successful so that you can be seen then this will be also attract like-hearted people. But living for attraction and approach of others is a tiring way to live. If your self-worth constantly relies on popularity your success journey is reduces to self-gratification. There is no joy in that fruitless effort.

5.    You can walk the success road well

Success in the kingdom of God is all about build  the lives of others. Your life purpose is tied somehow to this one cause-

Joshua 1:8
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

(It teaches us how to walk the road to success...)

BE FAITHFUL- IN SMALL THINGS, IN PRIVATE MOMENTS THAT ARE UNSEEN. HAVE A HEART THAT US DESPERATE TO SEE GOD’S PURPOSES ESTABLISHED AND THAT BEATS ONLY TO GLORIFY HIM.

We must not let this great enemy called success tie us in knots or straggle us or pull us back. As extravagant worshipers who dare to press forward and represent the Saviour and King, we must not retreat.
